Abstract

This project looks into a living community, specially about how people share it.

Shared living is a quite common living style for young people nowadays, It is a general belief that one could meet new friends, learn new things and save money through living in a shared environment. The young people are going through an important stage in their lives before becoming the mainstream of society. They start to form their personal values and position themselves in the society. In this critical moment, how will technology, people and the management of the community affect their mindset? And how will this influence be reflected in the future?

My thesis aims to explore possibilities of sharing a living community in a sustainable way. I wish to encourage people to care more about the living environment around us, and help more sustainable ideas to spread.

Sharing the same vision to archive sustainability in all aspects, Bostaden as the biggest housing management company in Umea supports this project under the context of their living community.

Inspiration and Method

I started by interviewing the management team of Bostaden and the residents in the shared corridors.

By analyzing the feedback from both sides, I found that when residents appreciate their livings, the community keeps in a good shape. The more they like their livings, their more they care about the cleaning, share knowledge and tools, build up good behaviors and culture, and keep doing so for a long time.

While for the most unhappy residents, one of the key problems is the bad communication, because they don't know each other so they don't care. They also keep looking for a better place, such behaviors cost a lot of resources for management teams to work on, and also make it difficult for their old neighbors to fix the changes in their living.

Solving communication is one of the keys but still not enough to achieve the goal of sustainable living. To get inspired, I did brainstorming workshops and read others' studies of Social Innovation and Creative Communities, I also found some local residents are providing sustainable services to the community, and more residents with their potential ideas are willing to do so. I realized i needed to design a service to provide channels to help residents build up sustainable living by themselves.

Result

Corridoor is a social networking platform to connect everyone within the living community. It is not help people reaching the world, but focus on the things around them.

Neighbors can know each other better through Corridoor. They can share resources, ask for help, invite for activities and explore interests.

The management team can reach their residents more efficiently. They can spread important informations, share sustainable knowledge, provide more activities and services to reduce energy consumption, improve recycling, together with the residents to build a sustainable shared living community.
